Airfare not included. Team members must travel on scheduled dates; air travel to be coordinated with Team leader and OCMC; ground transportation will be provided. Team members are encouraged to raise the additional funds to cover the cost of domestic and international travel.
Teach English at youth camps in Chuncheon and Pusan, South Korea. These Orthodox youth camps offer immersion ESL (English as a second language) lessons to Orthodox and non-Orthodox youth, and a living witness of the Orthodox Faith.
The 2012 OCMC Team to South Korea will participate in a summer youth camp utilizing the teaching of English as a Second Language. The Team will teach English to a variety of ages, pre-school children to middle school and high school students. A typical day in camp consists of Church Services, Bible Lessons, sessions of English and some additional activities, including art, music, discussions and skits. “Every day and evening was focused on being a Christian in every aspect of our lives,” reports a past Team member. The camp program is coordinated by South Korean clergy and church leaders and serves as an opportunity to expand the Church’s youth ministry efforts by sponsoring an event for youth to learn English while learning more about the Orthodox Faith.
ESL is conversational and can be taught without knowledge of Korean. Translators will be available. The program will be worked jointly with Korean clergy, volunteers and the team. Experience in working with youth, ESL (English as a Second Language) and youth camps is requested. Korean speakers welcomed.
Russian Orthodox missionaries were first sent to Korea in 1897. Within the next two decades, Orthodoxy was embraced by the people of Korea and the first ordination of a Korean occurred in 1911. The Orthodox Metropolis of Korea has established six Orthodox communities and eight chapels along with a Mission Center Facility. They have translated approximately one hundred editions of catechism, liturgical and spiritual books into the Korean language. The Metropolis has also organized Sunday Schools, youth groups, philanthropic societies, bible study groups and made scholarships available. In 1995 the St. Nicholas Theological Seminary was constructed.
Today, His Eminence Metropolitan AMBROSE, together with the local clergy, continues a sacred ministry in the “land of the morning calm” by proclaiming the Gospel message of Truth, especially in a place where Orthodoxy is still unknown. This growing Metropolis has invited an OCMC Mission Team to assist with their outreach efforts. Offer your witness in the “land of the morning calm” by joining this Team.
